What is Portfolio Company?

A portfolio company is a business in which a private equity, venture capital, or other alternative investment fund has made an investment. The fund's GPs typically take board seats and work actively with portfolio company management.

Portfolio companies are the investments that make up a fund's portfolio. The GP monitors each portfolio company, often takes a board seat, and works to increase its value through operational improvements, strategic guidance, and add-on acquisitions before exiting.

LP returns ultimately depend on the performance of portfolio companies and the GP's ability to exit them at attractive prices. Portfolio company performance data is reported to LPs in quarterly reports and annual audits.
