What is Anchor Investor?

An anchor investor is a large, early limited partner whose commitment helps a fund reach a first close and signals credibility to other investors. Anchors often negotiate preferential terms.

An anchor (or cornerstone) investor makes a substantial commitment early in a fundraise, giving the GP the momentum and credibility needed to attract additional LPs. Their endorsement de-risks the fund in the eyes of later investors.

In exchange, anchors frequently secure favorable terms via a side letter — fee discounts, co-investment rights, or advisory board seats.
