What is MOIC (Multiple on Invested Capital)?

MOIC (multiple on invested capital) is the ratio of total value created to the amount of capital invested. A 3x MOIC means an investment is worth three times the money put in.

MOIC is a gross or net multiple expressing how many times an investment (or fund) has multiplied invested capital. It is simple and time-insensitive — a 3x MOIC is a 3x whether achieved in three years or ten.

Because MOIC ignores time, it is usually paired with IRR (which is time-weighted) to give a full picture of performance.
